Secret Societies: What? Why? How? When? and Where?

Whenever the pages of history are turned, they usually bear the imprints of the hooves of conquerors' horses, the pomp and glory of emperors, the cries of subjugated nations, and tales written in the broad daylight.

We read the history that has been preserved in court chronicles, the books of official historians, and the monuments of conquerors. But if one scratches beneath this superficial, glittering shroud of history, a deeply astonishing and mysterious reality unfolds.

This reality reveals that a parallel world has always breathed behind this chessboard of power, religion, and knowledge.

This is a world where the destinies of nations were decided not in public squares, crossroads, or public assemblies, but in the dark subterranean vaults of temples, the hidden chambers of royal palaces, and mysterious monasteries. The language of this world was not that of ordinary humans; it was an empire of whispers, symbolic codes, and cryptic gestures.

When humans emerged from the dark life of caves to lay the foundations of civilization and culture, alongside understanding the complexities of the universe, they very quickly learned a cosmic principle of power: any knowledge, wisdom, or secret of governance that becomes public loses its power and awe.

The true source of power and its mystique remains protected only as long as it is confined to a few specific, tested, and chosen individuals.

The famous American researcher and esoteric scholar Manly P. Hall beautifully articulated this psychology:

> "The initiated, possessing a knowledge of the divine principles, were bound by a sacred oath never to reveal them to the profane." [Manly P. Hall, *The Secret Teachings of All Ages*, p. 21]

As we begin this serialized research encyclopedia—the purpose of which is to conduct an unbiased, rational, and historical post-mortem of all these mysterious secret organizations, esoteric movements, global elite clubs, and hidden centers of power—our first and most fundamental philosophical question arises: What exactly are these 'secret societies'?

What is the justification for their formation, why are they created, how do they operate, and at what turning point in history did they begin?

### The Two Domains of Secrecy

When sociologists and modern political scientists discuss the contours of secret societies, they classify them into two fundamental domains based on their structure and objectives.

 * **The First Domain:** This encompasses organizations whose very existence is entirely shrouded in secrecy; meaning, the general public is completely unaware that such an entity breathes among them. These organizations are usually purely criminal, assassin-led, or revolutionary in nature, with the sole purpose of hollowly undermining and toppling an established state, empire, or system from within.

 * **The Second Domain:** This includes organizations whose existence is visible to society. Their magnificent buildings and lodges stand in the center of cities, and people know well that a certain influential figure of society is a member. However, their true objectives, internal rituals, complete membership rosters, and ultimate goals are covered by a deep, mysterious veil of secrecy that is beyond the comprehension of the ordinary man. In today's modern era, Freemasonry and Skull and Bones serve as prominent examples of this second category.

But a highly fundamental question arises here: Are these secret organizations merely the product of modern exploitative systems or conspiracy theories?

A deep study of history and sociology completely refutes this premise.

Their roots are embedded in the oldest layer of human psychology, where man first stood helpless before the vastness of the universe, the fear of death, and the complex questions of life after death.

When primitive man witnessed thunderous lightning in the sky, storms, diseases, and death, his instinct forced him to seek a supernatural refuge. It was this fear and curiosity that gave birth to 'Mystery Schools' and 'Priesthoods' (exclusive classes of priests and magi) during the foundational eras of civilizations.

These priests were the people who contemplated cosmic phenomena, understood the orbit of stars, the transition of seasons, and the properties of herbs. They then withheld this knowledge from ordinary humans to establish a mysterious and powerful religious class for themselves.

The great Muslim sociologist Ibn Khaldun, while explaining the principles of the rise of power and social cohesion (*Asabiyyah*) in human societies, wrote:

> "Human organization is necessary... and they must have a restrainer (a ruler or controlling power) who keeps them from attacking one another." [Abdur Rahman Ibn Khaldun, *Muqaddimah Ibn Khaldun*, Chapter 1, Section 1]

The priests and ancient sages turned their secret sciences and mystique into that very 'power' and 'restrainer' through which they controlled society.

### From the Nile to Babylon: The Ancient Foundations

When we look back thousands of years ago to the fertile banks of the Nile, where the ancient Egyptian civilization flourished, we find the imprints of the world's earliest, organized, and most powerful secret centers.

The temples of Egypt, such as the magnificent sanctuaries of Karnak and Thebes, were not merely places of worship; they held the status of the greatest secret universities and centers of power of that era.

The Egyptian priests were the greatest mathematicians, astronomers, architects, physicians, and alchemists of their time.

They turned the legends of deities like Osiris, Isis, and Horus into a mysterious, allegorical system whose superficial meanings were meant for the masses to keep them in fear and devotion. However, the cosmic, scientific, and esoteric secrets hidden within these stories were restricted only to those specific individuals (*Initiates*) who passed through years of grueling, patient, and life-threatening physical and spiritual trials to enter the inner esoteric circle of the priests.

The concept of 'Initiation' among the Egyptians was not merely a prayer ceremony; it was a deeply psychological journey of metaphorical death and rebirth.

A new candidate would be left alone in the dark, suffocating, and terrifying subterranean chambers of the temple, where they were passed closely through hunger, thirst, illusions, and death. When the candidate emerged successful from these trials by slaying their old existence, ego, and worldly desires, only then would the High Priest bestow upon them that secret knowledge, which they believed to be the true keys to the mechanism of the universe.

These priests were so powerful and organized that they influenced even the political power of the Pharaohs.

Although the Pharaoh was ostensibly considered an incarnation of God on Earth, in reality, he was dependent on the secret astronomical decisions and political maneuvers of these priests. The foundation laid during this era regarding the mutual relationship between religion, power, and secrecy provided the initial blueprint for all major secret movements across the world in the centuries to follow.

Leaving the mysterious valleys of Egypt, as the center of civilization shifted toward the land of the Tigris and Euphrates—ancient Babylon—and then to Persia (Iran), we see the tradition of withholding knowledge to control power continuing with full intensity.

In ancient Iran and Babylon, there existed a similarly powerful class of astrologers and esoteric sorcerers whom the Greeks named the 'Magi'.

These were the people who turned the sciences of astrology, mathematics, and elemental nature into a hereditary and secret inheritance. They read the movements of stars to decide the destinies of kings, set the dates for wars, and held the status of the most important advisors to the empire.

Their knowledge was completely a forbidden tree for ordinary people.

### The Philosophical Turn: Ancient Greece

But as the wheel of history turned further and the center of civilization and thought shifted to Ancient Greece, these 'Mystery Schools' adopted a new, relatively philosophical, rational, and profoundly psychological dimension.

The 'Eleusinian Mysteries' of Greece were among the most famous, influential, and mysterious spiritual movements in human history.

These were secret gatherings held annually at Eleusis, near Athens, in honor of the goddess Demeter (the goddess of agriculture) and her daughter Persephone. Ostensibly, the legends of the goddesses were re-enacted in a dramatic format during these gatherings, but their esoteric and true purpose was to eradicate the fear of death from the human heart and present the philosophy of rebirth as a profound psychological experience.

The secrecy, discipline, and sanctity of these gatherings were such that for nearly two thousand years, out of the millions of people who participated, not a single individual ever revealed to the world what rituals were performed behind those closed doors and dark halls, what beverages were served, or what play of lights was displayed.

Anyone who dared to disclose these secrets or mock them faced only one legal punishment: death.

The greatest philosophers of ancient Greece, chief among them Plato and Aristotle, openly acknowledged the importance, utility, and spiritual effects of these Mysteries. Plato believed that these Mysteries purified the soul from worldly pollutions and prepared it to soar toward the higher realms.

Within this intellectual atmosphere of ancient Greece, we find another classic example of secret societies that heavily influenced modern secret organizations: the society of Pythagoras.

Today, we and our textbooks know Pythagoras merely as a mathematician and the creator of the 'Pythagorean Theorem.' However, they are unaware of the reality that the organization he established at Croton was not just a school, but an extremely rigorous, mysterious, and secret society whose members adopted a specific, austere, and meditative lifestyle.

Their fundamental philosophical and religious belief was that everything in the universe, every matter, every sound, and every movement of celestial spheres consists of mathematical numbers; they viewed the universe as a grand mathematical equation. They did not consider the principles of mathematics and geometry as mere worldly calculations; rather, they hid them from the common people, preserving them within their exclusive esoteric circle as a sacred, divine secret.

The conditions for joining their organization were so stringent and testing that new candidates had to observe a vow of absolute silence for five years before gaining regular membership. They were strictly forbidden from questioning, speaking to, or seeing the face of their master, so that they could first learn to listen to secrets in silence, eliminate their ego, and develop the capacity to endure the brilliance of knowledge. This is where we find the first concrete, logical, and psychological answer to the question:

**Why are secret societies formed?**

The primary objective of their formation is to ensure that the highest forms of knowledge and wisdom—whether spiritual, scientific, or political—reach only those specific people who are mentally, emotionally, and morally capable of bearing its burden, and whose loyalty, secrecy, and character have already been severely tested in a strict crucible.

They viewed knowledge like pearls that could not be cast before swine to be wasted.

### From Persecution to Power: The Roman Empire and Early Church

When the Greek civilization reached its natural decline and the Roman Empire dominated the world with its iron claws, organized military, and ruthless laws, Rome began to view all these secret religious, spiritual, and esoteric movements with deep suspicion and as a state threat.

The state religion of the Romans consisted of emperor worship and specific war deities, and they considered any group that held secret gatherings outside their system as rebels, enemies of the state, and traitors.

During this horrific era, when the pure divine, monotheistic, and loving call of Jesus Christ was popularized in the deserts of the Middle East and Early Christianity began, this righteous movement also faced severe state oppression, mockery, and brutality.

Since the Roman Empire was inflicting worst atrocities upon Christians—burning them alive and throwing them before hungry lions in the Roman Colosseums—the early Christians organized themselves into a 'secret society' for the survival of their faith, their lives, and their teachings.

Pages of history stained with blood reveal that they conducted their gatherings and worship in absolute silence within the dark, suffocating, and subterranean cemeteries and vaults of Rome, known as the Catacombs.

They invented secret codes and signs to recognize one another, evade state spies, and convey messages to safe locations. Among these, the most famous symbol was the 'fish' (*Ichthys*). When two strangers met on a path, one would carelessly draw an arc (half a fish) in the sand with his foot or staff. If the other person was also a Christian, they would immediately draw the opposing arc to complete the shape of the fish, and thus, without uttering a word, they understood that both followed the same faith and were brothers.

Here, history acquaints us with the reality that even a pure divine and true movement is forced to go underground and become secret for its survival and strategy when faced with state oppression.

But then, history took a strange and dramatic turn within its bosom.

In the fourth century AD, when the Roman Emperor Constantine himself embraced Christianity, the persecuted religion of yesterday suddenly emerged as the official and dominant faith of the Roman Empire. The Church, which until yesterday was hiding in vaults for fear of death, now arose as an immensely large, organized, ruthless, and powerful state institution.

### The Dark Ages and the Birth of the Knights Templar

This pervasive, statelike, and oppressive dominance of the Church laid the foundation for that long period of European history rightly termed the Middle Ages or the 'Dark Ages.'

During this era, the Catholic Church began to ruthlessly crush any ancient knowledge, scientific discovery, philosophical thought, or alternative spiritual doctrine as heresy, blasphemy, and satanic acts if it deviated even slightly from the traditional, superficial, and self-serving interpretation of the Bible by the priests.

The center of power had now shifted from the hands of ancient Egyptian priests or Greek philosophers to the tyrannical alliance of the Pope of Rome and his allied Catholic kings.

A reaction against this extreme rigidity of the Church, its demand for blind obedience, and the terror of the Inquisition courts was a natural, rational, and historical inevitability.

The people, philosophers, alchemists, and intellectuals who wished to keep ancient Greek and Egyptian sciences, alchemy, astrology, and alternative esoteric doctrines (such as Gnosticism) alive went underground once again to save themselves from being burned alive and from the wrath of the Church.

This dark, violent, and suffocating period of the Middle Ages proved to be the most fertile, important, and decisive era for the formation of modern secret societies, their ideological nurturing, and the evolution of their complex rituals.

The renowned researcher and historian of Western esoteric history, Arthur Versluis, comments on this historical oppression and the resulting esoteric movements in a highly comprehensive manner:

> "During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the dominance of the Catholic Church forced many alternative intellectual and spiritual currents, such as alchemy, Hermeticism, and various forms of Christian mysticism, to operate in secrecy, giving rise to numerous esoteric orders that sought to preserve ancient wisdom away from the eyes of the Inquisition." [Arthur Versluis, *The Hidden History of Western Esotericism*, p. 45]

It was from here, in reaction to this severe oppression of the Church, that highly esoteric, intellectual, and mysterious organizations like the 'Rosicrucians' were born. They claimed to possess hidden spiritual, scientific, and medical secrets of the universe that were far above the superficial understanding of the Church priests.

And during this exact era, while bloody Crusades were being fought in the name of a clash of civilizations between the East and the West, a mysterious, highly organized, military, and religious brotherhood was established in the ruins of Jerusalem in 1119 AD. It shook the foundations of future global politics, military strategy, and the modern global economy; this brotherhood was called the 'Knights Templar'.

The Templars were ostensibly simple, poor, and God-fearing Christian warrior-monks who had come to Jerusalem to protect unarmed Christian pilgrims traveling from various parts of Europe, and who had taken a vow of poverty. But what did they find during years of secret excavations in the ruins of the Temple of Solomon that completely transformed them?

What ancient secrets, military regulations, and financial concepts did they acquire from the Muslim esoteric orders and secret movements of the Middle East (such as Hassan-i Sabbah's Assassins)?

How did they rise overnight from being the poorest monks of Europe to become the richest and most powerful corporation of the Middle Ages, lending money even to kings?

How did they lay the foundations of today's modern banking system, international fund transfers, and the primitive system of credit cards?

And then, how did the Pope of the Church and King Philip IV of France, terrified of their immense wealth and growing political influence, declare them satanic worshippers and heretics in a single night, arresting them and burning their Grand Masters alive in public squares?

This is that tragic, blood-soaked, and astonishing tale that provided the most mysterious and solid material for modern-day conspiracy theories regarding secret organizations.

The links connecting the mysterious demise of the Knights Templar and their going underground to the birth of modern Freemasonry teach us a highly ruthless and immutable lesson of history:

> "Power never dies; it merely changes its form, its methodology, and its center under the pressure of circumstances."

### History vs. Conspiracy Theories: The Scholar's Boundary

Arriving here, before we descend further into the depths of the bloodstained, complex, and mysterious history of these organizations and evaluate their global role, it is extremely vital and academically indispensable to understand that thin, logical, and clear line between 'Documented History' and 'Conspiracy Theory' which separates a serious researcher from a rumor-monger.

Our contemporary tragedy is that today, whenever we study these secret organizations of the world (including modern organizations like the Freemasons, the Illuminati, Skull and Bones, and the Bilderberg Group), we usually fall prey to emotionalism, fear, and sensationalism so severely that we exaggerate their power to the level of supernatural and divine attributes.

We begin to assume that every leaf in the universe moves by their command, and that every small or large event occurring in the world—be it a natural disaster, an economic crisis, the assassination of a leader, or a global pandemic—is the premeditated outcome of some secret meeting of theirs.

Conspiracy theories actually exploit a severe psychological weakness and evolutionary flaw of the human mind. The human mind naturally experiences intense confusion and helplessness when trying to comprehend complex historical, economic, or political events with all their intricacies, conflicting factors, and unexpected accidents.

Therefore, to escape these complexities, it habitually seeks a highly simple, singular, and malevolent cause. It is very difficult for humans to accept that sometimes, situations are truly out of everyone's control.

If a country's economy crashes, the conspiracy theory will easily claim that it is the doing of the Illuminati or the Rothschilds.

The attitude of documented history and pure academic analysis operates in direct contrast to this.

Documented history fully acknowledges, with documentary evidence, that secret societies and the global elite exist. They possess immense wealth, extraordinary political influence, and media control. It is also true that they formulate policies behind closed doors, in private clubs, and at global forums like the World Economic Forum to protect their dynastic and corporate interests.

However, history by no means accepts that these organizations are, God forbid, omnipotent, that they never make strategic errors, that they have no internal disputes, or that human history is entirely a puppet in their hands.

The well-known American political scientist and researcher of conspiracy theories, Professor Michael Barkun, analyzes this psychological state by writing:

> "Conspiracy theories offer a world in which nothing happens by accident, nothing is as it seems, and everything is connected... They simplify complex historical processes by attributing all significant events to a single, omnipotent, and secretive group, ignoring the intricate interplay of economics, geography, public opinion, and mere chance." [Michael Barkun, *A Culture of Conspiracy: Apocalyptic Visions in Contemporary America*, p. 3]

### The Road Ahead: A Comprehensive Investigation

In this serialized and comprehensive research encyclopedia, we will break free from emotional biases, baseless internet rumors, and the fortress of sensationalized tales. On purely academic, analytical, and historical foundations, we will conduct an unbiased post-mortem of all these most powerful secret organizations of the world.

We will examine, through authentic references, how modern Freemasonry formally emerged from the ashes of the Knights Templar and the medieval stonemasons' guilds, and what intellectual, political, and ideological role it played behind the scenes from the American Revolution to the French Revolution.

We will also analyze what the true intellectual and philosophical objectives of the original 'Illuminati'—founded in 1776 in the Bavarian city of Ingolstadt by Professor Adam Weishaupt—really were. We will explore how it sought to bring rationalism by ending the supremacy of the Church and monarchy, its clash with the State and Church, and why, centuries later, it was turned into the biggest and most terrifying epicenter of modern conspiracy theories.

We will speak about the highly influential elite organizations hidden within the corridors of power in America and top-tier universities like Harvard and Yale, such as 'Skull and Bones' and 'Bohemian Grove', which consistently produced American presidents, CIA directors, and global policymakers, and whose mysterious rituals remain an enigma to the world today.

We will not restrict our analysis to the West alone. We will also conduct a close and critical study of those esoteric and military movements established in the medieval Islamic world, particularly the 'Order of Assassins' (*Hashashin*) founded by Hassan-i Sabbah. Sitting in the fortress of Alamut, they struck equal fear and awe into the greatest Seljuk Empire of their time and the Crusader rulers of Jerusalem, introducing a concept of *Fidā'iyyīn* (fedayeen) that later laid the groundwork for modern guerrilla warfare and targeted killings.

The purpose of this extensive research expedition is by no means to impose the awe of these organizations or to push readers into some dark cave of fear and despair. Rather, it is to understand this 'Science of Power,' human psychology, and political dynamics—how a handful of humans, through a specific code, strict discipline, and mysterious secrecy, played with the destinies of nations for centuries.

This journey is exceptionally long, arduous, and passes through those dark, damp, and bloodstained corridors of history that have always loathed light and realism.

But the first formal destination of our journey on this cosmic chessboard is that ancient and pervasive esoteric system that first used 'sacred secrecy' and 'divine fear' as the greatest and most effective political weapon of power in human history: the mesmerizing temple established on the banks of the Nile, whose reins were in the hands of a handful of priests and magi.

In the next episode, we will open those mysterious and terrifying closed doors of ancient history. We will trace the true esoteric power hidden behind the glittering crowns of the Pharaohs and conduct a post-mortem of the astonishing, scientific, and strategic history of those earliest confidant priests of the 'High Priesthood of Thebes,' who laid the foundation for a sacred and horrific operational system whose deep shadows can still be clearly seen on the faces of today's most modern secret organizations.

*To be continued!*

> **Note:** The purpose of this serialized research project is not to incite hatred against any individual, religion, nation, sect, organization, or civilization. Rather, it is to understand those hidden corners of history in an academic, researched, and objective manner that impacted the balance of politics, economy, religion, culture, and power across different eras.

> Throughout this journey, our effort will be to learn to draw a clear distinction between authentic historical facts, traditions, fictional narratives, conspiracy theories, and unverified claims, so that opinions can be formed based on logic, research, and critical consciousness rather than emotion.

> In this regard, we will examine the historical evolution, ideologies, beliefs, objectives, methodologies, mutual relations, mutual conflicts, and the real or attributed impacts on the world of secret societies, esoteric movements, religious and political brotherhoods, revolutionary networks, the global elite, intelligence agencies, and hidden centers of power from the ancient world to the modern era.

> Simultaneously, we will attempt to discover what the root causes of the centuries-long conflicts and disagreements between various civilizations, religions, states, and ideologies were; which matters pertain to documented history, which pertain to political propaganda, and which were given birth by later-era conspiracy narratives.

> If we read this entire series sequentially from beginning to end, we will not only better understand the historical reality of secret societies and various centers of power, but also learn where the ideological, political, religious, economic, and informational conflict stands in today's world. We will see where different organizations and networks have arrived with their respective ideologies, and why, as an aware reader, we need to test every claim on the touchstone of research, criticism, and authentic evidence.

> Our goal is not to create fear or sensationalism, but to promote knowledge, insight, historical awareness, and intellectual awakening, so that we can separate reality from fiction, history from propaganda, and evidence from mere claim.

*Stay connected!*
