Goldendoodle.
Origin and History of the Goldendoodle: The Evolution of a
Hybrid Star
The Goldendoodle was born in the early 1990s, when breeders
in North America and Australia were specifically looking for hypoallergenic
dogs for allergy sufferers. Inspired by the success of the Labradoodle (a cross
between a Labrador and a Poodle), the idea of combining the Golden Retriever
with the Poodle was born. The reason: The Poodle not only inherits its curly,
low-shedding coat, but also its high intelligence, while the Golden Retriever
is known for its gentle nature and family friendliness. The Goldendoodle is a
designer dog created by crossbreeding a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. First
widely bred in the 1990s, they are bred in three different sizes—each
corresponding to the size of Poodle used as a parent.
Historical breeding Milestones:
1992: First documented Goldendoodle breeding in the USA.
2000s: Boom in use as therapy and assistance dogs thanks to
their empathetic nature.
Today: Established as one of the most popular "designer
dog breeds" worldwide.
Expert Tip: The term "designer dog" is
controversial – reputable breeders prefer "hybrid dogs" to emphasize
the distinction from mass-bred dogs.
Character and Temperament: The Psychology of the Goldendoodle
Goldendoodles combine the cognitive abilities of a poodle
with the social adaptability of a golden retriever. According to a study by the
University of British Columbia (2016), poodles are among the top 5 most
intelligent dog breeds – a gene pool that benefits the Goldendoodle.
Typical character traits:
Social skills: Goldendoodles bond strongly with their families and are
known for their child-friendly patience. They are ideal for households with
small children or other pets.
Work ethic: Whether as a rescue dog, therapy companion, or agility
athlete – their eagerness to learn makes them versatile.
Empathy: They sense moods and react sensitively to stress, making them perfect
companions for people with anxiety disorders or depression.
Case study: In German therapy centers such as "Tiere
helfen Menschen e.V." (Animals Help People), Goldendoodles are
specifically used to facilitate social interaction for children with autism.
Appearance and variations: Genetics meets aesthetics
The appearance of a Goldendoodle depends heavily on its
generation:
F1:
50% Poodle, 50% Golden Retriever – often wavy coat, large size.
F1B: 75% Poodle, 25% Golden Retriever (backcross with Poodle) – more curly,
hypoallergenic coat, medium size.
F1BB: 90% Poodle, 10% Golden Retriever – often curly, but also wavy, usually
mini or smaller medium size, considered hypoallergenic.
F2: Cross between two F1 Goldendoodles – greater variability
in coat and size.
Size chart:
Sizes:
- Standard: Typically 20-24 inches
tall and 50-90 pounds.
- Medium: 16-20 inches tall and
30-50 pounds.
- Miniature/Mini: 13-16 inches tall and
15-30 pounds.

What is a Goldendoodle?
The Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a
Poodle. This four-legged friend is not a dog breed in the true sense of the
word, but rather a so-called hybrid dog. The FCI (German Kennel Club) has not
yet recognized the breed.
Things to Know About the Goldendoodle
The fair price for this breed is around €2,400.
Of course, these hybrids come with a pedigree certificate
with precise documentation of the ancestral test results. One parent is a
Standard Poodle and one parent is a Golden Retriever. It doesn't matter which
way the pedigree is combined, the result is always the same, as each mammal
carries 50% genetic information from the father and 50% from the mother. Due to
genetic diversity, one can assume increased health resistance if the parents
are appropriately genetically tested, as is always the case here. Hybrids are
frowned upon in some clubs, which defies all logic, as this perfect blend
produces flawless results.
The size designation for adult Goldendoodles (derived from
the English word mix and poodle) is standard or medium.
When fully grown, Goldendoodles reach a body weight of
approximately 18 kg - 25 kg and a shoulder height of approximately 55 - 60 cm,
meaning they are on average 57 cm tall and weigh 22 kilos.
In my opinion, breeding Mini Goldendoodles is a health
concern and not in the spirit of sensible breeding! For animal welfare reasons,
my breeders do not offer MINI Goldendoodles in their network. In my opinion and
experience, it is unnatural to breed a large dog with a miniature dog. There
are plenty of alternatives, such as Cockerdoodles, which are naturally smaller.
These dogs are ideal for allergy sufferers because they don't
shed hair and shed very little, if at all (even a Poodle can be brushed with a
few hairs). They come in many colors, for example, GOLDEN like a Golden
Retriever, which is also the name of these dogs. Breeding two dogs of similar
color produces the most beautiful results with rich, glossy colors. White,
apricot, and golden are the common colors in my service.
They have a very elegant movement and are unsurpassed in
their enchanting appearance. They always remind me of a dog from my childhood
TV series, "Boomer the Stray Dog." Their wavy, gorgeous, and
silky-soft coat can be clipped or trimmed from about 4 months of age. Their
floppy ears give them a friendly and docile expression. Some groomers, with a
skilled hand, transform these dogs into true beauties.
Their coat is wavy and thick, making them very weatherproof
and resistant to cold and heat. Their coat should always be groomed with
special brushes and grooming products to make them easy to comb. This way, they
are always admired for their beauty and grace.
The top coat doesn't fall out on its own and grows
continuously. To keep the muzzle hair nice and clean even in everyday life, I
recommend using dry food for light-colored dogs.
They are generally very robust and healthy, but not
invulnerable. Therefore, these dogs, especially puppies, must always be handled
with care and protected from hazards (electrical outlets, pools, etc.). All
Doodles are very child-friendly, and please make sure your children are also
friendly to dogs. In my personal opinion, there is no better breed as a family
dog. Owners always describe Goldendoodles as "jacks of all trades"
because they perfectly fulfill every requirement. The term F1 hybrid always
refers to the first generation of two purebred parents of different breeds.
This is the only way to ensure the distinctive appearance and the desired
intelligent behavior. Each subsequent breeding splits the genes again. This is
then called F1B or F2B, and results in a different appearance and coat.
