Secret Societies: What? Why? How? When? and Where?
Episode 2: The High Priesthood of Thebes – Egypt's Earliest Secretive Priests and the Rise of Sacred Power
**By Bilal Shaukat Azad**
Whenever the pages of history are turned, the earliest and most mysterious glimpse of human civilization appears before us, emerging amidst the scorching deserts of Africa along the fertile banks of the Nile.
Around 3,500 years ago, when most of the world was wandering in the darkness of ignorance, tribal savagery, and nomadism, a magnificent civilization breathed on the soil of ancient Egypt. Its constructed pyramids, colossal statues, and mysterious temples remain an unsolved puzzle for modern science today.
But the true marvel of this civilization did not lie in the carving of its stones; rather, it was hidden within the psychological, political, and esoteric system of power that, for the first time in human history, forged **religion**, **secrecy**, and the **state** into a complex and insurmountable equation unmatched before.
## The Illusion of the Pharaoh and the Real "Deep State"
When we talk about Egypt, the image of Pharaohs usually comes to mind—rulers who called themselves living gods on earth. However, dear reader, the bitter and astonishing truth of history, deliberately erased from court chronicles, is that the strings of these glittering, jewel-encrusted crowns were actually held by another powerful, silent, and mysterious class.
This class was the **"High Priesthood of Thebes"**, a secret society of priests and clairvoyants that laid the foundation for human history's very first **Deep State**.
To understand Egypt during this era, we must immerse ourselves in its psychological and social atmosphere.
The annual flooding of the Nile, upon which all of Egypt's agriculture, economy, and life depended, was seen by ordinary Egyptians as a miracle tied to the pleasure or anger of the gods. This psychology of fear and hope gave birth to an intellectual class that scientifically and mathematically studied the movement of stars, seasonal shifts, and river flows. Yet, instead of sharing this knowledge with ordinary humans, they wrapped it in a shroud of **"sacred mystery,"** making themselves the sole intermediaries between gods and men.
The Holy Quran profoundly points toward this psychological enslavement of Egyptian society and the exploitative behavior of the elite, stating:
> "فَاسْتَخَفَّ قَوْمَهُ فَأَطَاعُوهُ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَوْمًا فَاسِقِينَ"
> *"So he made a fool of his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were a people defiantly disobedient."* (Al-Quran, Surah Az-Zukhruf, Verse 54).
>
Delving into the depths of this Quranic verse reveals that fooling nations is not possible through sheer force alone; it requires a psychological and religious narrative that strips away the human capacity to think and understand. In Egypt, this narrative was created not by the Pharaoh, but by the priests of Thebes.
Amun-Ra and the Fortress of Karnak.
The roots of this mysterious system grew deepest during Egypt's New Kingdom when **Thebes**—which ancient Egyptians called **'Waset'** (modern-day Luxor)—became the empire's capital. Here, a local deity, **'Amun'**, whose very name means **"The Hidden One"** or **"The Invisible One"**, was merged with the sun god **'Ra'** to form **'Amun-Ra,'** declared the king of all gods.
The etymology of Amun's name itself reveals the esoteric and hidden nature of this entire religious structure.
For the worship of Amun, the magnificent Temple of Karnak was constructed. It was not merely a place of worship; it was the largest university, the largest bank, and the greatest hidden center of power of its time. The person leading this temple was called the **'Hem-netjer-tepi'**—the **'First Prophet of Amun'** or the High Priest.
This High Priest and the exclusive group of priests under his wing formed human history's first formal secret society that divided knowledge into degrees:
* **Exoteric (Outer) Knowledge:** Intended for the masses, consisting of myths, superstitions, and public rituals.
* **Esoteric (Inner) Knowledge:** Encompassing astronomy, geometry, medicine, chemistry, and cosmic mathematical principles, strictly confined to specific initiated priests.
The celebrated historian Will Durant notes this class division in his monumental work:
> "The priests of Egypt were the first to establish a state within a state... they held a monopoly of learning, and they kept the sciences as a secret and sacred mystery, hidden from the profane eyes of the multitude." *(Will Durant, The Story of Civilization: Our Oriental Heritage, Vol. I, p. 201)*
>
The Ordeal of Initiation: Psychological Death and Rebirth.
The process of membership or **Initiation** in this secret society was no ordinary ceremony; it was a terrifying and grueling psychological ordeal designed to break down and rebuild the human psyche.
A new candidate, usually from a high-born lineage, had to endure years of labor just to progress from the temple's outer walls to its inner sanctum. According to modern historians and researchers of esoteric sciences, this initiation ritual involved lowering the candidate into the dark, complex, and labyrinthine subterranean chambers beneath the Karnak Temple.
They were kept in total darkness, isolation, hunger, and thirst for days so that the worldly man and his ego (*Ego*) would completely die. When they touched the absolute brink of the fear of death, torches would suddenly ignite in the darkness, and priests wearing terrifying masks would appear before them.
This was, in essence, a psychological exercise of death and rebirth.
Once the candidate severed ties with their old self and experienced a spiritual rebirth, the High Priest would introduce them to the scientific and mathematical principles of the universe called **'Ma'at'** (Cosmic Order). At this stage, the candidate took a solemn oath never to reveal these secrets to any uninitiated person, a violation punishable only by death.
They were taught how the universe aligns with the movement of the stars and how geometric principles could concentrate energy when building pyramids and temples. This rigid discipline fostered a brotherhood whose loyalty was directed more toward their temple and fellow priests than to the person of the Pharaoh.
The Economic Giant and the Veto Power.
The power of this secret society was not merely spiritual or intellectual; their true strength lay in their economic and financial savvy, which turned the Temple of Karnak into the earliest precursor of the medieval Knights Templar and modern Wall Street banks.
Great American Egyptologist James Henry Breasted outlines the immense wealth of these priests in his research:
> "At the height of the New Kingdom, the High Priesthood of Amun owned practically one-third of all the lands of Egypt, hundreds of thousands of slaves, vast fleets of ships, and treasuries overflowing with the gold of Nubia. They were an economic behemoth that rivaled, and often surpassed, the Pharaoh himself." *(James Henry Breasted, A History of Egypt, p. 362)*
>
Imagine a class that possesses ultimate knowledge, holds the strings of the masses' religious beliefs, and hoards one-third of the empire's wealth in its vaults—could they be mere temple caretakers? Absolutely not! They were the true rulers of Egypt.
Whenever a Pharaoh attempted to go against their will, the priests would suddenly declare that the god Amun was displeased, and the deity's statue (which they manipulated via hidden mechanics and wires) would shake its head in refusal before the court. To the public, it was the judgment of the god, but in reality, it was the High Priesthood's political veto.
Akhenaten's Rebellion: The First War Against the Deep State.
This system of power faced its greatest challenge in history when a Pharaoh ascended the throne determined to uproot this exploitative and secret network of priests. His name was Amenhotep IV, known to history as **Akhenaten**.
Akhenaten realized that the priests of Amun had held the state hostage in the name of religion. Taking a revolutionary step, he not only banned the worship of Amun and all other deities but also introduced the world's first state-sponsored monotheistic system by ordering the worship of **'Aten'**, the sole god of sunlight.
He stripped the priests of their lands and wealth, shut down their temples, and moved away from the corrupt and conspiratorial atmosphere of Thebes to establish a new capital in the middle of the desert called **Amarna**. Akhenaten's rebellion was the first open war in history fought by a political ruler against a deep state and a secret society.
But, dear readers, here we learn a ruthless lesson about the dynamics of power that remains as true today as it was 3,500 years ago:
> **The Principle of Constructive Disappearance:** The priests seemingly surrendered; they fell silent and went underground. While Akhenaten lived out his dreams in his new desert city, the priests were quietly reweaving their network in the dark cellars of Thebes.
>
As soon as Akhenaten died, this secret society returned with full force. They brought Akhenaten's young and inexperienced son, **Tutankhamun**, under their influence, forcing him to relocate the capital back to Thebes and restore the worship of Amun. Akhenaten’s name and legacy were so mercilessly erased from history as if he had never existed. This was the ultimate, brutal, and silent victory of the priests' secret network.
When the great Muslim historian and philosopher Ibn Khaldun discusses the decline of states and the breakdown of *Asabiyyah* (social cohesion), he makes it clear that when a ruler is severed from his core power and the influential classes of society, his downfall becomes inevitable. Akhenaten's failure lay in his attempt to eliminate this centuries-old, deeply entrenched, and psychologically potent network in a single blow, without liberating the minds of the people from the fear the priests had instilled in them.
Symbols, Secrets, and the Clash with Conspiracy Theories.
These priests of Amun created several symbols and signs to recognize one another, keep their messages confidential, and protect their knowledge from public eyes—symbols that are surprisingly still used in many secret organizations today:
* **The Ankh:** Resembling a cross with a looped top, symbolizing eternal life and the key to hidden cosmic knowledge.
* **The Eye of Horus (Wadjet):** Known today as the **'All-Seeing Eye'**—which still features on the US dollar bill—originated in these Egyptian temples as a symbol of cosmic consciousness and esoteric insight.
* **The Djed Pillar & Ashlar:** Symbols of stability and cut stone, which were part of the priests' geometric and architectural secrets.
Now comes a philosophical and historical turning point where authentic history and conspiracy theories clash intensely.
In modern times, when secret esoteric movements like Freemasonry and the Rosicrucians gained momentum in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, their founders began claiming that the ancient sciences, magical feats, and geometric secrets they possessed had been passed down directly, generation after generation, from these ancient Egyptian priests. They claimed that when the Egyptian civilization declined, this secret group of priests took their secrets and departed toward Palestine and Europe, from where these secrets reached the Knights Templar and later the Illuminati.
In the world of the internet and exaggerated literature, it is still continuously claimed today that the contemporary global order (The New World Order) is being run by the direct descendants and intellectual heirs of these Egyptian priests.
However, dear readers, when we sift through these claims using the sieve of knowledge and analyze them on purely historical, archaeological, and rational grounds, the truth looks entirely different.
Modern archaeologists and unbiased historians reveal that **no direct lineage, material tie, or blood relationship exists between this ancient Egyptian priesthood and modern Freemasonry.**
It is an established historical fact that Egyptian priests secretly preserved the sciences of astronomy, medicine, and geometry, and it is also true that Greek philosophers (such as Pythagoras and Plato) studied for years in these Egyptian temples and transferred these sciences to Greece. But claiming that any modern secret society is the direct successor of these priests is a historical fallacy.
What actually happened was that during the Renaissance, when European thinkers rebelled against the conservatism of the Church and returned to ancient knowledge, they incorporated these symbolic signs of the Egyptian priests (like the Eye of Horus or the pyramids) into their organizations to give their new philosophy an ancient, mysterious, and divine sanctity.
Dr. Frances Yates, a renowned expert on esoteric history, unpacks this riddle:
> "The Renaissance esoteric traditions did not possess an unbroken chain of transmission from ancient Egypt. Rather, they reinvented and enthusiastically adapted Egyptian symbolism, primarily through the texts of the Corpus Hermeticum, to construct an imagined intellectual genealogy that lent authority to their secretive orders." *(Frances Yates, The Rosicrucian Enlightenment, p. 52)*
>
The Ultimate Fate of Sacred Tyranny.
Dr. Yates's research clearly illustrates how conspiracy theories distort historical facts. It is true that Egyptian priests were the most powerful, conspiratorial, and secretive people of their time, and the psychological mechanism of keeping power hidden that they pioneered is still used today across modern power structures. The concept of **'Information Control'** achieved through algorithms in today’s digital world had its first brick laid in the Temple of Karnak. But believing that those priests are still rising from their mummified bodies to rule the world is merely a sensationalist fantasy.
Islamic intellectual and historical consciousness teaches us that the arrogance of power ultimately turns to dust. When a system of power stands on exploitation, class division, and fear instead of justice, its foundations hollow out from within. The Holy Quran repeatedly narrates the story of Pharaoh's downfall, announcing the destruction not just of a single man but of that entire tyrannical and exploitative state structure:
> "فَأَخَذْنَاهُ وَجُنُودَهُ فَنَبَذْنَاهُمْ فِي الْيَمِّ ۖ فَانظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الظَّالِمِينَ"
> *"So We took him and his soldiers and threw them into the sea. So see how was the end of the wrongdoers."* (Al-Quran, Surah Al-Qasas, Verse 40).
>
Before this divine decree, all the mysterious secrets of the priests, their constructed idols of fear, and their immense wealth washed away like debris in the waves of the Nile. When the Romans, followed by Christianity, and later Islam stepped onto the soil of Egypt, this Deep State of Thebes, its priests, and its mysterious rituals were finally buried in the dust of history. Today, their magnificent temples are nothing more than stone ruins for tourists.
The Legacy Shifts Geography.
The physical era of these Egyptian priests and the grandeur of their temples ended, but the seeds they sowed regarding human psychology, secrecy, and the struggle for power did not die. Esoteric methods of acquiring power and ideas are never buried in the sand; they merely change their geography and appearance.
The priests of Thebes taught the world that if a specific group organizes itself through rigid discipline, esoteric rituals, and "sacred secrecy," it can shake the foundations of any empire. This "science of power" traveled through Middle Eastern trade routes to Babylon, Persia, and Greece. Humanity's inner hunger and thirst for power through secret gatherings were increasing rather than waning.
Now, this mystery was emerging from the tranquil environment of temples onto the fields where the clashing of swords and the collision of empires were to redraw the map of the world. From here, this secret game of power took a new and highly bloodthirsty turn.
As the sun of Egyptian power was setting and the Roman civilization was rising on the world's horizon with its iron claws, a surprising new cult was emerging from the convergence of the hills of ancient Iran, the temples of Babylon, and the underground vaults of Rome. It bound religion and warriors into a rigid discipline unmatched in the world at the time.
This was a secret brotherhood comprising ruthless generals and commanders of the Roman army who held their secret assemblies away from the sunlight in dark caves, spilled the blood of bulls, and passed through seven mysterious degrees of initiation that struck terror into the ancient world.
In the next journey of this serial encyclopedia, we will exit the valleys of the Nile and descend into those dark, subterranean tunnels of the Roman Empire where sword-wielding warriors and mysterious priests bowed before the same deity.
In the next episode, our topic will be: **The Cult of Mithras – The Secret of the Sun Born in the Caves of Darkness**, where we will unveil the labyrinth of history that has been deliberately hidden from human eyes until today!
*To be continued!*
**Note:** *The purpose of this serial research project is not to incite hatred against any individual, religion, nation, sect, organization, or civilization, but rather to understand those hidden corners of history in an academic, research-oriented, and unbiased manner that influenced the balance of politics, economy, religion, civilization, and power across different eras.*
*Throughout this journey, our effort will be to learn to distinguish clearly between authentic historical facts, traditions, fictional narratives, conspiracy theories, and unverified claims, so that opinions can be formed based on reason, research, and critical consciousness rather than emotion. We will review the historical evolution, ideologies, beliefs, objectives, methodologies, mutual relationships, conflicts, and real or attributed impacts on the world of secret societies, esoteric movements, religious and political brotherhoods, revolutionary networks, global elites, intelligence agencies, and hidden centers of power from the ancient world to the modern era.*
*Concurrently, we will attempt to understand the root causes of the centuries-old differences and conflicts among various civilizations, religions, states, and ideologies—which matters belong to authentic history, which pertain to political propaganda, and which were given birth by later conspiracy narratives. Reading this entire series in order from beginning to end will help us not only better understand the historical reality of secret societies and different centers of power but also recognize where the ideological, political, religious, economic, and informational struggles stand in today’s world, how far various organizations and networks have reached with their respective ideologies, and why as a conscious reader we need to test every claim on the touchstone of research, criticism, and authentic evidence. Our goal is not to create fear or sensationalism, but to promote knowledge, insight, historical awareness, and intellectual awakening, so that we can separate reality from fiction, history from propaganda, and evidence from mere claims.*
*Stay tuned!*
